At Fort Healthcare, our speech pathologists will decide which areas need to be assessed depending on the age of the client and the presenting difficulties however a comprehensive diagnostic speech pathology assessment involves assessment of the following areas:
- Receptive Language
- Expressive Language
- Speech (Articulation/Phonology)
- Voice Fluency Social Communication
- Play
- Feeding
- Literacy (possibly including phonemic and phonological awareness, reading, writing, and spelling)
- Swallowing assessment
- Mealtime assessment

Our Speech Pathologists' Key Roles
Assessment:
- Conduct comprehensive evaluations to identify the nature and severity of communication and swallowing disorders.
- Assess speech, language, voice, hearing, cognitive-linguistic, and social communication skills.
- Analyze oral-motor skills and swallowing function.
- Review medical history and relevant reports to understand the underlying causes of the communication disorder.
Diagnosis:
- Based on the assessment findings, diagnose specific communication and swallowing disorders
Treatment:
- Develop individualized treatment plans based on the diagnosis and patient goals.
- Utilize various therapeutic techniques to address specific communication and swallowing needs
Education:
- Educate patients and their families about communication disorders and swallowing difficulties.
- Provide support to help patients cope with their challenges.
- Assist patients in setting realistic goals and developing self-management strategies.
Collaboration:
- Work with other healthcare professionals, such as physicians, occupational therapists, and psychologists, to ensure coordinated care for patients.
